I can’t help but feel like a failure sometimes. I feel like I should be further along. Sometimes it seems like I’m just stuck and life is passing me by. Have you ever had these thoughts? It’s easy to get caught on this hamster wheel of feeling less than. We live in the social media age where everyone shows us all the good going on in their lives. You know, the highlight reel. It’s time to shut these thoughts down and focus on living your dream – whatever that is.
When we start questioning where we are in life, there’s a reason for it. Many times those reasons are legit and a good time to reflect and assess. Other times, we’re questioning where we are based on what we’re seeing around us. It could be someone you know getting a promotion, buying a house, getting married and on and on. It could be what you’re seeing on social media. People you know are taking fab vacations or having success in other areas of their lives. That, my friends, is still straight up comparison-itis.

With Intention + On Purpose

Here’s the thing, we all know people don’t usually share posts about their struggles. That doesn’t mean they don’t have them. You know that already though. In other cases, maybe their life is just as good as they say it is. How awesome is that? The thing is, I bet it wasn’t always like that and I bet it took some work to get there. I’d also promise you that it’s taking living life with intention and on purpose to keep it there.

My question is who are you comparing your life to and why? Stop for a minute and think about who you were a few years ago. What were the things that you wanted for your life? What did living your dream look like then? Did you want your family life to look a certain way? Did you want your career to move in a particular direction? What goals had you set for yourself. How many of them have you reached? What I’ve found is that we sometimes overlook something really simple. Where you are now, at one point, was a goal.
It could be that we set out to get a degree and struggled through it, but now you’re prepping to walk across that stage. It could be that you started saving three years ago for a house and now you’re actually in a position to talk to a realtor. Maybe you started a business. For the longest time it seemed like no one was going to take you up on your services, but now you’ve got a client or two or more. Whether we take time to notice it or not, we’re reaching goals all the time. Where you are now was probably a goal in some way or another.
If that’s not true for you, let’s take a good look at why. Can you pinpoint the reasons that you haven’t moved in the direction of your goals? List reasons why you haven’t made progress. Take steps to change. Small steps count too. As a matter of fact, start with the small ones. They’re less overwhelming. Just make sure your efforts are for your dream life, not the one you see other people living. Make sure the dream you’re chasing is genuinely yours. Spending all your time chasing someone else’s dream is a great way to keep feeling stuck. Even if you reach it, it probably won’t make you happy. Chase what’s true to you. It will make its way to you.

So tell me, are you living your dream? What’s that look like for you?

  1. I love that message – where you are now was once a goal. WE are going through a tough time right now and I was just reminding my husband that we need to remember that once upon a time we prayed for what we have now. I also need to have faith that 6 months from now I can be in a completely different place. Knowing that keeps me going.

  2. Comparison is such a trap and it’s easy to get caught up. Especially nowadays with social media and everything else. It’s so important to keep everything in its proper perspective.

  3. Comparison is the thief of joy. When people ask me about my journey I give them 100% truth good or bad. Social media doesn’t keep it real and people need the real. They wouldn’t compare as much if they did.

  4. I love this post. I definitely agree where I am now was once a goal. It may not be the ultimate goal, but I have definitely hit a ton of my milestones.

  5. I am in a moment of figuring out my purpose. I’ve defintiley been feeling like I’m not on the right track for my life so I’m working on refocusing and getting on track!

  6. Great Post! I’ve been feeling this way especially when it comes to blogging. I guess in due time I will figure it out! But this post was right on time!

  7. With social media and blogging it is so so easy to compare yourself with other people. I’ve learned to not covet what people have because you don’t know what they’ve gone through to get it or what they’ve given up or giving up for it. I’m living my dreams and making changes along the way to suit my current lifestyle and needs.

  8. Wow. I LOVE this: Where you are now, at one point, was a goal. Just having a website was a goal a few months ago…and now I do. Today is the 2018 #AtoZChallenge Reflection day. I’ve been putting off writing it because I didn’t know what to say. Well, now I think I do! 🙂 Thanks!
