One of my closest friends lives about forty minutes away. We used pick a restaurant about half way for both of us and meet up for girlfriend time and dinner. It was our Mom’s night out. My husband always joked that on those nights he didn’t expect to see me home until at least 1am. There was always so much to catch up on over dinner and drinks. These days, that’s not happening, of course.

We’ve had a Zoom here and there to catch up over a glass of wine. In the last few months though, we’ve decided to kick it up a notch. We’ve been scheduling virtual wine tastings through various wineries in our area. It’s been a good time. Our husbands get in on the fun and we make it a double date night. The wineries send the wine samples or full bottles, depending on what you request. Then the day before the virtual wine tasting you get a Zoom or YouTube link to join the virtual tasting.

Some of the tastings have had wine reps join the Zoom from various parts of Italy. This was really cool when we did a tasting featuring a tour of Sicily. You could tell there was some competition between the reps since they were in the same area. Each one was sure to make it known that they were the best in Sicily!

To get ready for these tastings, we each get lots of snacks to nosh on while sipping. We tend to get fruit, olives, crackers, nuts, salami and we’ve had nice log of blueberry covered goat cheese. After the tasting is over, we might all order sushi or something and have our own private Zoom dinner together while we sip what’s left of the wine. It’s a fun way to spend time together in this new normal.

One of the better virtual wine tastings had a trivia night theme. The guys hosting the tasting were fun! One was fasting, so he would taste the wine but he wasn’t drinking. The other guy was having full glasses of everything we tasted and it was OBVIOUS! He was having a GREAT time and they kept us cracking up all night. That one was my favorite because it was more interactive and the guys were informative but really just ready to have a good time.

So, when was your last friend date? Would you consider a virtual wine tasting?
