You really don't have to explain yourself. Here's 9 times when no explanation is needed

Life if full of choices. Where you’ll live, what you’ll do, who you’ll be, how you’ll live? No matter the choice you make there’s always someone who has an opinion and wants you to explain yourself. They could very well be well-meaning or spiteful. Whatever the case, there are always opinions. In some situations, and with certain people, we feel the need to explain why we do what we do. We try to give them our side of the story to make them feel more comfortable about the choices we’re making.

It's your life and you should never let someone else control it.It could be something that comes with getting older. Maybe it’s the shift that happens when becoming a mom. I dunno. At some point though, you reach the point of being cozy in your own skin and realizing there are some things you don’t need to apologize for or explain.

Now, I’m not talking about just being rude. Never that. It’s just getting to the point of living your life in a way that suits you without feeling the need to apologize to people who don’t get you. Everyone doesn’t have to get you. That’s totally fine. One area that stands out is the way I chose to eat. I’m a big supporter of the whole natural and organic life. It’s something that’s important to me. I have my reasons. It’s been interesting to find how many people make judgements based on a desire to be healthier. Whatever the reaction, things that pertain to being healthier is on the list of stuff we should not feel the need to explain. What else is on that list? I’m glad you asked!

Things you never need to explain...

  • why you’re putting yourself first on your own list – it should be self-explanatory
  • why you’re emotional – you’re allowed to feel
  • your uniqueness – no need to explain that thing that makes you special
  • being unbothered by the expectations of others – everyone doesn’t deserve the opportunity to ruffle your feathers
  • why you’re trying it again failures and all – you want what you want…end of story
  • your old self – people are allowed to change, grow, evolve
  • being healthy is not snooty – eating to live doesn’t require an explanation
  • chasing your dreams – they’re yours to chase
  • making a choice that’s best for your family – never explain why you do what’s best for those you love

What things would you add to this list?

  1. Great post! Makes me think of that Jimi Hendrix quote… “I’m the one that’s got to die when it’s my time to die, so let me live my life the way I want to”. We all need a reminder sometimes to choose what we need for no other reason than we want to.

  2. I do feel like I need to explain my emotions sometimes, but you are right – why should I? It’s totally natural!

  3. I totally agree with you on this list. We shouldn’t have to explain things that we’re trying to do better at or even trying to correct. We all have our own way of doing things, and no one should question that.

  4. I totally agree to this post, Yet great post indeed. There a lot of circumstances that u feel enough without any explanation given Its been natural.

  5. I love this! I am always explaining my life, my decisions, and my situations to everyone. I need to stop feeling like it is anyone’s business. My life is about me not about justifying it to the world.

  6. I always feel bad for those who cannot let go of the past and for those who try to make others live in it with them. We are allowed to grow and change and we do not have to be defined by how we lived, but by how we live.

  7. I had to laugh a little when I read about not having to explain about “your old self”. There are some days that I am really glad that social media wasn’t around when I was growing up though I do still have to hear the occasional jab from my sisters.

  8. I couldn’t agree with this list more. Sometimes, people just need to do what they need to do without explaining themselves.

  9. Yep, you’ve got some great ones here. I love that you gave the shout out for things we can and should do w/o apology.

  10. Awesome article! Right on time. I’ve been struggling with this for a while and I’m just getting to the point where I no longer feel the need to explain anything. If I’m not feeling it, I’m not doing it. “No is a complete sentence!’ lol

    • Getting older definitely brings that change. You feel less inclined to explain anything to anyone or toe be anyone other than who you are.

  11. This post really hit home. There are plenty of times turning around and walking away from someone who questions you is the best of course of action instead of allowing them to ruffle your feathers. I am trying to get this message to my daughter, to quit explaining yourself and just do it.
