Every May is a big deal. Mother’s all over are honored. There are brunches, dinners, flowers, jewelry and anything else you can think of. We typically go all out to honor our mothers. It’s been that way for awhile. It seems that for some, Father’s Day is an afterthought. I don’t even think it’s always intentional.

In many cases, people have grown up without their father, or maybe he just wasn’t a good father. Whatever the reason, Dad doesn’t always get showered with love the way Mom does.

This Father’s Day I want to acknowledge a couple of men who have helped to shape the woman I am today. Of course, that would be my own Father.

While he and my mom didn’t make it as a couple, he has always been a part of my life. We’ve definitely had our battles, (mainly during the rough pre-teen years) but we’ve managed to build a relationship that I cherish.

Then there’s the love of my life, my wonderful husband.

I knew he’d be an awesome father before we started our family and he’s just continued to amaze me. He loves our son – HARD. He’s tough when he needs him to be and his personal jungle gym when the time calls for it. Our son looks up to his dad. When kids at school get too close, he’s quick to tell them, “No, not you Daddy. That’s MY Daddy!” Their relationship is one I’ve always wanted for my kids. I’m sure this little girl in my belly will be showered with love like I’ve never seen. She will be daddy’s little girl, after all.

One day he’ll take her on her first date and show her how a young lady should be treated. He’ll teach my son how to treat a woman by the way he treats me. He’ll leave lasting nuggets of wisdom with both of them that they won’t even value until they’re older. The impact a good father has is amazing!

How are you celebrating Father’s Day? Any great nuggets of wisdom from your Dad?

  2. Thanks for thinking of the dads! They are an unintentional afterthought for some. We have many surprises planned for the hubby, including breakfast in bed. This will be a big thing becauses he’s usually at work when we wake. He leaves so early!

  3. This is beautiful. Just beautiful. You’re very lucky to have such great men in your life! Happy Father’s Day to them both!

  4. Beautiful, and so, so true! We do need to appreciate the fathers in our lives. We have a daughter, and it’s amazing to see my husband with her. Watching the way he interacts with her makes me love him all the more. The same with watching my dad interact with his only granddaughter. Being a father (and a grandfather) seems to bring out something special in men, doesn’t it?

    Have a great Father’s Day!

  5. Happy belated fathers day! I do feel bad that dads get the short end of the stick. Maybe we should start making them boutiques of chips and let them watch action movie marathon on fathers dad.

  6. What a sweet post and a sweet way to honor the men in your life! I totally agree — Mother’s Day is always such a big deal, and Father’s Day, there is so much shade surrounding it. I wasn’t raised by my father and I’m now a single mom, but I STILL think that we should dedicate Father’s Day to the men who are awesome role models. Without the shade. LOL.
