Just the other day I was thinking about how many years I’d spent in school. I don’t know what made me think of it but the number was close to twenty years. That’s a long time.
I remember being in college and being in such a hurry to graduate. I was so ready to experience real life. I did everything I could to get out in four years. Once I’d graduated and started working, everything was good. It was new and exciting. After a while the luster of being a real life grown up wore off.
I began to realize that every stinking piece of mail coming to my door had my name on it, every bill had to be paid by me because my name was on it. Ugh! It was a far cry from the semi-carefree lifestyle of college. The only bills coming to my door had been for magazine subscriptions. Now it was power and light bills and rent! Why did I want this so bad? It was a long way away from my dorm room and eating meals in the cafeteria.
Looking back, I wonder why the heck I was in such a rush? My guess is that nearly20 years of learning, in a classroom setting was getting to me. I needed something different for my everyday. While I missed the nearly responsibility free life, there are some things I don’t miss about school.
- Overall, I don’t miss the classroom setting.
I like learning in different ways. For me, doing something is a great way for me to learn it. That wasn’t always an option in school. Lectures were the norm in many cases. Kind of blah, if you ask me.
- I don’t miss taking stuff I have no interest in just because it’s required.
I like learning new things all the time but it’s even more interesting to me when it’s something I care about. Calculus, was/is not on that list.
- I don’t miss being broker than broke!
Trust that I’m not rolling in it now but I’m not on a Ramen noodle and tuna fish diet anymore either. I used to eat tuna fish sandwiches DAILY! I don’t miss either of those delectable dishes at all!

I mostly do not miss the UNNECESSARY classes they force you to take. That would’ve shaved off a semester or 2.
I definitely hated the finacial aid process.
What I do miss tho is when the only bill I had was a $9.99/mth pager/beeper bill. I can hear my kids now “what’s a pager/beeper?” Ha 😀
I don’t miss the stress.I was a straight A stressed, overachiever from grade school to high school to college. I am so DONE. I think that’s why I haven’t gone back from my masters. And I don’t miss being broke either!

So funny, I remember living on ramen noodles and peanut butter with jelly sandwiches. Of course, delivery pizza was a staple too. I actually do miss the classroom setting, which is why I haven’t applies for on-line grad school. Somehow, the idea of not being able to converse with others in person just seems so weird.
I don’t miss trying to fit in with everyone at school! My whole goal in life was to be “normal.” Now, I know there is no such thing!

I don’t miss the useless classes either. I don’t miss being carless. I love the independence that I car brings. I do miss the atmosphere of being on a college campus though.

Ohh good post. I miss boring, dry reading. Might sound crazy but i am desperate to return. I love learning and its SO hard when I am perpetually sleep deprived.

Great convo…I miss the freedom of not having to worry about paying bills because students loans did that!!! I can Say that now because I finished paying off those loans:-)
I hear ya. I wanted to be free too only to hate the real world. I was thinking ‘People live like this for years!’ Something has to give. Now I am in my 30
‘s, married with two kids….living like that BUT still trying to figure out a better way! LOL
I do not miss SCHOOL and the classroom, homework, paper, group projects part of it at all. I miss the friendships, the kicking it and the overall experience of college. I too like to learn even now but mainly things I have an interest in.

i was in the “non-traditional student” category. i started college as an adult, a single parent. i don’t miss getting off work, rushing to daycare to get The Girl, then to campus to drop her off at the childcare center there. i do miss the challenges of taking tests (yeah…i’m a nerd that way!).

I don’t miss trying to keep up with the “cool” kids. Yes, I fell into that trap. Trying to have the clothes, the shoes, and the hair styles was just too much and I am glad to be LONG over that phase.

The stress. Everything in school stressed me out. I couldn’t get a low grade, had to read constantly, had to always be on top of my game. I really don’t miss that.
Like you I was in a rush to get out too, then I started working at my first job after college, and said, wow can’t wait for summer. Then it hit me, I’ll be working for summer. I’ll be working all seasons and all weather.
I should have tried to enjoy the care free school world more often. I look at my daughter and the kids in the area, and as for responsibility wise, they don’t know how good they really have it.
