I mentioned in a post this week that I happen to be 6’1″. Most people seem to think being tall is pretty cool. I agree. *wink*
As much as I like it now, I didn’t appreciate it growing up. It wasn’t easy being taller than everyone in your class. Guys included. The downside of my height was all I saw for a while. Out of everything, what really stood out were the comments that people made. Here’s a short list of the comedy that comes my way.
“You can’t be 6’1″, I’m 6’1″. You have to be at least 6’3″. At least!”
When I tell you how tall I am, don’t argue with me about it.
Do you meet people taller than you?
I’m tall, not a freak of nature. Of course, there are people taller than me.
Can I climb you? (yes, someone has said this to me)
Rude. Crude. And socially unacceptable. That is all.
Do you play basketball?
Every tall woman or person for that matter doesn’t have an interest in playing sports.

The basketball one although I may not ask I will think it. I can’t believe someone would ask if they can climb you WTH no ma’am that is just rude.

I remember when I was taller than a lot of people and I disliked it too…it’s hard growing up…but like you said you like it when you are older. Yes people can be really rude.
Love it! I hate when people argue with me about my height! It’s very true, “no, you’re not…”

My husband is 6’8″ and his sisters are 6’2″ and 6’1″ so yea– he has heard it all. He gets asked all the time by random people how tall he is and his favorite thing to do is tell people he is 5’20”– always throws them and has even had some say, there is no way you are 5 foot!
There are sometimes people taller than him but he doesn’t like it, he likes being the “tallest” 🙂

I can so relate to this. I’m 5’9″ and I have been this height since my early teens. I was always taller than everyone in my class since kindergarten. The kids called me Olive Oyl and all kinds of lovely things 🙂 And like you, I didn’t appreciate my height until I became an adult. Now I love being tall! It took a long time though for me to become comfortable with my physical self. LOL, for some reason, finding out that you’re tall makes me feel like we’re old friends. I can relate 🙂

“Can I climb you?” REALLY?! People are so weird! I’m short/average height but I was tall as a kid. I just had my growth spurt super early in life and while everyone else kept growing I just stayed about the height I am.

Ugh! People can be so obnoxious with height comments sometimes. There was a company called I Love My Height that made witty tees to answer the random comments/questions that tall people get. I’m 6’2 and bought the one that says “No…I don’t play basketball”. I think there was even one that said “No climbing allowed”. Unfortunately, the company’s website is down so I guess it’s no longer in business. P.S. happy to find another tall blogger.

Like Emmy my husband is 6’8″ and always gets asked the bball ? but he did play ball but it’s still annoying. When ppl ask he tells responds “No, I’m a jockey.” It’s priceless seeing their faces! I can’t stand when people ask him, “How’s the air up there?” That’s SO dumb. I’m preparing for my daughter to be tall too – at 2 1/2 she’s already well over half my height and people think she’s already 4. Estimates are that she’ll be at least 5′ 10″ and at 5’6″ I’m going to be the runt of the family!
