My curiosity got the best of me. I just had to know what was out there. I wanted to know what people were doing with my name! So, I set up a Google alert. I get an alert whenever there’s activity with my name attached to it. If I’m mentioned anywhere on the web, I get an email about it. Initially, I set up an alert for my blog but then I got curious about my name. I should have consulted with someone before doing this. I really should have. The things I am finding out are crazy. People are totally misusing and abusing my name. Me no likey. I don’t think it’s helped me to know what people are there are doing with my name. It may even make me want to think about changing my name. Maybe.

Then, I look on the bright side – some of these wonderful people are musicians, others are very athletic. I found out another person who shares my name is looking for work in the medical field. Many seem to be high school students with new twitter accounts. It’s kinda funny the things you find out about with people who have your name. Some of them think they are supa, dupa fly and proclaim their flyness in their twitter bio’s. Others are supportive parents being interviewed about their kids at sporting events. One thing I’m finding is that people with my name REALLY love playing sports. I find that so ironic. As tall as I am at 6’1″ I didn’t play not one sport and didn’t even care to fake like I was interested.

One bad apple in the bunch of people that share my name is this lady who was charged with aggravated battery with a deadly weapon. Yeah, we’ll just act like we don’t know about her and pray she changes her name.

Have you ever set up a Google alert for your name? It’s fine to say no and let me be the only weirdo in the room – yeah, that’s totally cool.

  1. No I haven’t….but I am going to! Fortunately my name is soooo unique that there isn’t another soul out there with it lol. Good idea however, I am going to set up both alerts just in case!! I am a strong believer of keeping your name and image squeaky clean, never know when I might decide to run for president 🙂

  2. I am going to say no and let you be the only weirdo in the room! LOL. My name is totally one of a kind. I think I am the only one with my name in the world. It would be interesting to do though. So, how do you do this? Do you just google your own name?

  3. I have alerts for my blog, but not my name. Honestly I believe it would just make me too paranoid everytime I got an email. I do search for myself periodically to see what comes up, but I don’t obsess over it. I think everyone has to know that there is so much online that isn’t true that you do have to do real research to learn about someone. I don’t think you are a weirdo either way. 😉 xo

  4. My name is wayyyy too common, lol, I would drive myself crazy! I tried to set one up for my blog, a while ago, but I couldn’t get it to work and just left it alone. You’ve piqued my curiosity now though, I may have to revisit that, lol! I don’t think it’s weird at all!

  5. I’ve had a google alert for my name for a really long time. Mostly it’s because I’ve written so many articles and I want to know if someone has used one of my articles. It is amazing though to see what others say about you LOL.

  6. I work in tv. So do google myself every now and again. I do it because I dont want someone misusing my name either. but I never thought to set up a google alert. I didn’t know you could do that! Thanks for the info!

  7. Fellow weirdo CHECKING IN!!! Heck yeah I have alerts on my name. And it freaks me out when I get the email that there is an alert. *lol* I’ve met a really cool chick through facebook with my EXACT NAME. And my first name is not very common. Go figure.

  8. Yeah man, let’s pray she changes HER name. LOL. I didn’t set up a google alert, but I have googled myself in the past. Like last year during my last year of grad school, I wanted to know what results my name yeilded, especially since I was going to be applying to jobs. Didn’t want anything sketchy out there.

LOL @ young teens and twitters accounts.

  9. Well, as stated, I set up an alert for my name and though I seem to be quite the “nobody” …lol… only two people with my name are Internet worthy: the gay teacher and coach (not my profile) and the honor roll student (more my speed). Thanks again, Cam 😉

  10. I never thought of it! I google my name every now and then just to see, bit no alerts. There can’t be many folks with my name! Lol

  11. WOW! I tried setting one up for my blog a while ago and I’m not sure what happened to the alerts but I just googled myself and a doctor in Arizona came up so that’s good lol. My name is kind of common so I think that would just drive me crazy

  12. You are so much braver than me with this. I don’t think I want to know if or what people are using my name for.

It sounds like a good idea though, maybe I’ll bite the bullet.

The only thing I check is the different variation of my name. Gotta make sure no one opens a credit card.

  13. i haven’t done blog, name, or any other alerts. and after reading this, i’m kinda scared to do so! i’ve thought about it, but then realized it would be something else for me to obsess over. i don’t need any more triggers for my mild-to-moderate OCD. i do Google myself frequently though. i’m glad you found some positive stuff out there.
