Years ago, I was a newbie to this Los Angeles life. I was taking it all in every way that I could. I was always at an event. I was always game to hit the road and see the surrounding cities.
Once my friends brother came to town. He had brought a friend along and wanted to show him a good time. So we all went to Tijuana, Mexico. It’s just across the border from San Diego. We figured it would make a great day trip. It was quite the adventure! There’s a stark difference in life from California to Tijuana.
There were toddlers selling Chiclets gum, and people all over trying to sell you whatever they thought you might buy. The toddlers on the street was something I could not get used to. The other thing that we noticed was the music. No, it wasn’t music you might expect to hear in one of Mexico’s popular cities. Well, I take that back. There was a little salsa and maybe Nortec style music could be heard on the streets, but not for long. The music we heard as we walked by different establishments had a distinct sound. We noticed that whenever we approached, they changed the music. It would go from whatever they were playing, to hip hop – instantly!
Everyone that saw us, formed their hand into a “W” and shouted Westside! We are all, “Um, what is really going on here?” At one point the music switched up to Tupac’s California Love and people got all excited and started dancing like they were in a rap video. This was their way of appealing to us so that we would come into their stores and shop. While there, we stopped to get something to eat. As soon as we walked into the restaurant, you could practically hear the record scratch as the music changed to Aretha Franklin’s Natural Woman. Seriously! If nothing else, you have to give them props for trying to cater to their guests even if they were going about it a pretty odd way. They get an “A” for effort, right? Maybe.
Then, me being the tall chocolate girl I am, I got a unique greeting. As I walked by people shouted out “What’s up Lisa Leslie?” While I think she’s pretty. I don’t think I look like the former WNBA star at all but um, OK.
Fun fact: Lisa and I attended the same church for a while. I swear, people used to get us confused. Another fun fact: I think she and my former classmate, Omarosa look more alike.

That is hilarious! I would’ve been a bit offended. I hate when people try to act “down” around me. For instance, I have a girl who I work with who noticeably changes her tone and demeanor when she’s talking to me…. because I’m black. I hate that.
When I first visited Miami (because it’s widely touristy- all different nationalities), everyone kept thinking I was a different nationality and speaking to me in their native tongues… so I purchased a tank that said BLACK GIRLS ROCK. lol

One of my best friends and I always get confused for each other. We worked on the same unit and people ALWAYS get us confused. And we look nothing alike! Lol. And she has a cartibesn accent!
I dont think you look like Lisa Leslie either. And Lisa and Omorosa look nothing alike in my eyes.
Then again, I’m bad at seeing dopplegangers.

Ha! I’ve never been to Tijuana and I don’t like look Lisa. However I went on vacation to South Carolina once and we went to a mall that is built on swampland. There are bridges that connect the shopping huts and you can see alligators crossing underneath you. Freaky. What’s even more strange is that I ran into my softball coach there! And we were both from NJ.

The toddlers standing and selling candy in the streets would’ve thrown me too! The music changing as I walked by would’ve been odd too, but you’re right,they were trying to entice you guys to stop in. I always think it’s weird when people say I look like someone else…especially if I’ve never met them. I love your fun facts!

I remember when I went to Mexico with my family, we stopped somewhere and these little kids came out of nowhere and started climbing all over the RV trying to wash it. I was terrified! Lol
What an interesting travel experience! As I planned my destination wedding I saw Mexico pop up so many times in my research. I personally never go the appeal especially with the violence on the border and the sickness issue that happened a while back. We stopped briefly in Cozumel on our cruise this year but I know this was just a touristy port. . . I do think Lisa looks more like Omarosa, but I can see how people would confuse the two of you!

I also visited Tijuana when I lived in LA and I couldn’t get over how many stray DOGS there were!! I’ve seen lots of Farrell cats before but never that many dogs. That is way too funny about all the rap music and Aretha Franklin – OMG!!!

I have indeed been to Tijuana. My ex husband is from So. CA so the first time he took me out there, I insisted we go. I would be fine with never going back, especially after seeing all those kids seeing chiclets on the streets. such a culture shock.
I do not have a celebrity doppleganger but think maybe I would like one. So if anyone out there is listening and they look like me, please become a celebrity. Thank you! I love how you’re like “Oh we’ll just go on a trip to Mexico!” Seems so weird to me being from the northeast!

Totally an A for effort but you would think they would realize that you were there to experience their culture. I have heard about the toddlers on the street before, I don’t know if I could actually see that without wanting to take them home. It would just be too hard on me.

I have been to Tijuana and I just remember it was a ton of poverty. I was younger and just wanted to leave it was rather scary to me. I do remember some of the pretty blankets and other items they were selling.

“Toddlers on the street selling chiclet gum…” I’m in tears since that sentence!!!! I’ve never been to Tiajuana and I don’t think I look like Lisa Leslie but once during a spring break trip I had to sleep overnight inside an Orlando FL Wal-Mart, LOL!! A bunch were driving to Miami and one of the cars got a flat tire in the middle of the night. Of course the auto dept was closed when we got to WM so we set up shop and camped it out, LOL!!

I have never been to Tijuana but I have been to Cancun and Merida Mexico; kids selling things is definitely weird and something to get used to- that is so funny they kept changing the music.

One I don’t think you look like Lisa Leslie, but it is funny what people see. We have a friend that kind of looks like Michael J Fox and he used to get that comment all the time. Two, weird with the music! And kids in the street selling stuff…that would be hard for me to get used to.
