We all know so many things change after having a baby. Your body has, ahem, a few transformations. One thing I didn’t expect to hit me so hard was no longer feeling like I had my swagger. You know, the sexy swagger. After getting my pre-pregnancy body back give or take a pound or two… I still didn’t feel quite like me. Maybe it’s the little pooch that I know is there or maybe it’s because I’m someone’s mother! That puts me in a whole other mind space. I want to be the mom who still pulls it together and maintains my former self to a certain degree but, it’s nearly impossible and not nearly as important as it used to be. I’d rather be on the floor with my son playing with his blocks or reading a book. My challenge is finding a balance. I don’t want to completely lose me. So how do I do that? Well, with my husband’s help, I’ve been trying a few things. Not too long ago, he actually MADE me take a mommy afternoon out! I went out and ran some errands (the mommy in me) but I also went and got a pedicure. It was heavenly. I remembered, for a brief second, what it was like to just be me. It was good to not be on a schedule for a few hours. I didn’t have to worry about nursing the baby (left milk with the hubby), getting him down for a nap or changing a diaper. I have to admit, it was hard for me to leave and I felt completely guilty at first but I realized it was good for me and my whole family if mommy has a little girl time. I also have been doing a little clothes shopping. I hadn’t bought anything new since having the baby. He was 9 months before I realized I could use some new duds. I bought some of the cutest jeans and shoes! They went a long way in helping me feel like my old self. Another tactic of my husband was to send me to the spa. He found a great deal on a massage using Groupon and hooked me up. While all of my feel good tactics cost money, trust me, they didn’t cost much. We are new parents and our son isn’t cheap so we save money where we can. The pedi was $20, the jeans were on sale for $30, the shoes we a Groupon deal much like the massage. Did you have the same blah feeling post baby and How did you get back you pre-baby swagger?

  1. I love your blog!!!

This is my last comment, I swear.

While I know your baby is little, and my upcoming comment may not be relevant for a while, let me say first that I’m pretty sure a happy and relaxed mommy can only bring good to her family.

Secondly, this is the best thing my mother ever said to a once-petulant little me:

“It’s not my job to entertain you 24 hours a day. You have an imagination. Go do something with it.”

Like I said, this won’t be relevant for a while, but it may come in handy one day. 🙂

  2. Abby – I’m glad you like the blog! YAY! I’ll have to store your mom’s imagination line in my back pocket! 🙂

  3. After all these years, I don’t know if I’d recognize my pre-baby swagger if it hit me on the top of the head. 🙂 Then again, I have not tried a massage. That’s brilliant. I’ve never had a massage before. I think one is in order for sure!

  4. Hey Tall Girl, Ok-Love the Blog and yes, I think every mom goes through that. It took me until this past year to get my “swagger” back and you know how much of a social butterfly I was and Brooke is 5 soon to be 6. It is really hard trying to find that balance in today’s world. You are doing good. Realizing that you need that time is the first step-how you choose to spend it is the second. Feeling guilty will always be there because of the type of people and mother’s we are. You are not alone. Thanks for the space to let our(mommies) thoughts be heard. I knew you were destined to write. You are still my TALL GIRL and we love you. Peace and Blessings-Cheryl Jones Byrd 🙂

  5. @Amy- thanks for checking in and enjoy the massage. Definitely in order!

@Cheryl – thanks so much for checking out the blog! It’s been a great release for me. This mommy this is something else and I LOVE IT!
