Lately it seems like I’ve been seeing these same videos over and over. Either it’s being shared on the web or it’s on the news. I keep seeing a baby getting a cochlear implant and being able to hear for the first time. I’m not sure why I always seem to catch it. But since I have, I figured I’d pay it some attention. Wouldn’t you know it – you can learn something form everything!

Each time, the chain of events is the same. The baby is with his/her parents. The parents have this nervous excitement. They are hoping this works and that their baby will be able to hear their voices. They are preparing themselves for the possibility that it won’t work. The baby is leery. Never sure what the heck is going on. As the implant is being connected the baby may be a little fussy, unsure and skeptical. Sometimes they even cry. Once it’s turned on though, there’s this look of caution and wonder all at the same time. The parents say the baby’s name and the baby responds. It’s emotional for everyone involved.

Here’s what it made me think of: life. You know those times when we set out to try something new? new

There’s a lot of hesitation, skepticism and uncertainty. There’s doubt that it will even work as well as the anticipation of, “Oh my goodness. What if this works?” We push through all of the awkwardness, the leery feelings and sometimes pain. Once it’s done and whatever we’ve been pushing for actually works out, there’s this joy! Sometimes there are even tears. And you know what, you’d go through it all again just to get the end result.

You know that feeling? Remember all of those feelings and emotions the next time you try to take on something new. The next time you doubt yourself. The next time you try something that feels all kinds of awkward. Remember what it felt like the last time you were here and it all worked out. Remember what it felt like that last time you were there and it didn’t work out. How did you feel? What did you learn? Remember all of this – and then GO.

  5. Surprisingly I haven’t actually seen that video before. Mostly because half the time I see youtube videos they’re about cats or proposals. I have been trying to stay away from the internet as much so that helps. This is a great post, and as weird as it sounds I’m right there. I’m trying something new by trying to lose weight and not giving up. The new part is seeing where I will be and how I will be successful. That’s hard for me.

    • You’re welcome. I try to ask myself if I’ll be OK if I don’t try it. If there is any part of me that would regret not trying, then I have to go for it.

  16. I love change but it can also stress me a little. We are military and move a lot, so we have a change of environment often. It always challenges me and our family, but we grow and change each time.
It is always hard to start something new, but so much fun when it goes well.
