Since having my bambino, I have encountered more than my fair share of negativity. You know the kind when people ask about your baby and you respond with loving words about how your little one is the best thing ever. All normal and great. Then there’s the response. It usually starts with, “yeah, you say that now” and then they continue with all the things that their child has ever done to annoy them. Like, just wait until he starts (insert annoying habit here). One conversation that stands out for me was with a woman while I was getting my hair done. She asked me about my son and I said with a smile, “he’s awesome”. To which she responded, “you’re saying that now…”. Then she asked me what he was doing – is he walking and talking? I told her yes he was doing both and she made a negative comment about that. We continued to talk and I mentioned that I just really love to hear the word “mama”. She said that he’s probably calling me all the time because he wants cookies or something. At which point I knew this conversation needed to end. Why must my love for my baby boy be met with such “Debbie Downer” responses? Can’t I legitimately just be my son’s biggest fan and think that everything he does is spectacular? I even think his tantrums are cool. I’m not all, “do it again baby!”. But I do know they just mean that he’s developing on pace with other kids his age. I think it’s cool that he asks me a million times to name the animals on his wall or in his books. He’s learning. It’s not all a part of his plot to drive is mom crazy. It would worry me if he was always calm and never had an outburst. It would worry me if he wasn’t curious about the world around him. I may be all Pollyanna about the whole thing because he is my first child but so be it. Would it hurt people to sometimes try a different conversation? How about:
Them: How’s your baby?
Me: Just awesome!
Them: Yeah they’re great – isn’t it cool that (insert adorable story here)
Me: Yeah, it’s pretty cool.
Was that hard? I know that as he gets older there will be things he does that test me and drive me nuts. I did the same to my mom. Sorry Mom, love you! There will also be great things he does to inspire me and make me proud. I chose to shift my focus that way.
