It’s January, which may mean you are setting new goals. I get it. The new year makes it feel like you must do some new things. Or at the very least, make some progress on the goals you’ve let fall off your radar a bit. I’ve got a few goals of my own. Some are getting attention and I can see the progress I’m making. Others are on the struggle bus and begging for my attention.

I asked myself why. Why is it that some things get my immediate commitment and attention while others end up living on the back burner? I had to admit that maybe those things weren’t as important to me as I’d thought. Maybe those goals just sounded good. Perhaps it sounded like something I should be doing. That’s a recipe for never-gonna-do-it.

Feel-Good Goals

Have you been there? Are you there now? Here’s an idea. It’s important to take some time to think about how you’d like your life to look. Being as detailed as possible helps. Aside from what you want things to look like, think about how you want to feel. Instead of setting goals about what you want to do, how about setting some based on how you want to feel?

If you want to feel more joy in your life, think about the things that create that for you and make it a goal to do more of that. If you want to feel more energetic, find those things that give you that boost in energy. Maybe you want to feel more successful. First, you have to define what success looks like for YOU. Then, get busy moving in that direction. What can you do to get you there?

Once you figure that out, decide what stepping stones you need to cross to get to your goals. Then have an honest talk with yourself and pinpoint the beliefs you’ve held on to that have kept you from making real progress. Once you’ve done the groundwork, you can take steps toward the life you said you wanted at the top of this post. One step at a time. One feeling at a time.

It should feel good to accomplish something. Start there.
