When I saw the opportunity to review Harmony Valley Vegetarian Mixes I thought,  perfect timing. My son is not a big fan of meat at all and we’re always struggling to find a protein substitute he’ll eat. One can only serve so much peanut butter, beans and cheese. We also toy with the idea of becoming vegetarians so this seemed like a great opportunity to see what options were out there. I was excited to try this out.

I sampled  a vegetarian hamburger substitute. You’re supposed to use it the same way you’d use ground beef so,  I decided to make meat loaf. I wasn’t sure how much this little packet would make so, I opted for mini meat loaves. You have to add water to it to hydrate it and leave it in the fridge for 15 minutes. As I was mixing in the water I noticed how good it smelled.

Here I was thinking I was going to have to season it and it was pre-seasoned! That’s a win. I was surprised at how much it turned out to be after letting it sit.

I mixed in my few ingredients to jazz it up and popped them in the oven.

After about 20 minutes I had cute little meat loaf cakes with cheesy centers. YUM!

The real test would come with my husband and son. We sat down for dinner and I was pleasantly surprised. The texture was certainly that of ground meat and the seasonings helped flavor wise so it didn’t taste like plain soy. My son didn’t do so well. We blame the teething as he didn’t eat much that night. He didn’t even touch his broccoli and that’s one of his favorites. My husband cleaned his plate with no problem and overall I’d say dinner with Harmony Valley  was a success! I think I’d try it again with the little man… once the teething thing isn’t an issue.

  1. Maybe your son is one of those natural vegetarians? People who just don’t have the taste for meat. These look pretty good to me! I’ll have to give them a try!

  2. I love the idea of mini vegetarian meatloafs. They look yummy. What a great substitute for meat. I think I’d like to give the Harmony Valley Vegetarian Mixes a try. Thanks for sharing your experience.

  3. How cool! I just tried Morning Star breakfast sausages with maple syrup flavor and loved them! I was truly surprised at how ‘meat like’ they were. LOL

  4. The mini meatloaves. I must try. Was that a regular muffin pan? I’ll hit you on Twitter, I need the recipe. I’m sure we will be using Turkey. One step at a time!!
