There is something to be said for having a minute to yourself, to just be. I don’t get too many of those  minutes these days so when I do I really appreciate them.

As much as I love my non-existent me time, I also appreciate some good company. This weekend I took the liberty of getting a sitter and setting up a date for my husband and I. He’s been working so hard and doing so much that I wanted to take a night to celebrate him. We decided to keep it simple and just go to dinner. Of course, the night of our date, he came down with a cold and told me he thought he had strep. Not quite the way you want to start off a date. It didn’t matter though. We were both looking forward to some alone time.

Once we got to dinner it was amazing to be able to just order for myself and not think of what I needed to order so the baby could eat off my plate. It was nice to not have to remind my son to use his inside voice or to quit wiggling. I never know how much we miss  by hardly ever being distraction free. It was nice to just be able to talk, uninterrupted and in no rush. I’m making it a point to do this at least once a month. I think we had only had one date since our daughter’s birth. I may be just imagining that date. She’s 16 months, so we were well overdue.

On the way home from our date, we saw this little stinker! Eww!

photo 2(5)On Sunday, I hung out with another young man and loved every minute of it. While my husband and daughter were laid up in the house sick, I walked my son over to the park. We took the bucket with sand toys and bubbles and sidewalk chalk and had a ball. That little man is full of great conversation too. We sprawled out across the sidewalk and created our own little work of art. There were dinosaurs, flowers and the sun and water. I was so proud of our creation that I had to snap a pic.

photo(36)We spent over an hour at the park going from one activity to another. We also got a chance to talk. I always love getting time with just my little man. For nearly the first three years of his life, he got all of our attention. I like to get him all to myself every now and then to remind him that he still has my attention. He talked to me about his marriage to a dinosaur girl. News to me. He talked to me about school, his sister, his life. His little almost four year old life. I was a captive audience. We laughed. Genuine laughs. Not the, “let me humor you because you’re my child” laugh. No, he’s actually pretty funny. On the way home I decided to let him ride on my back. I think that was the highlight of the afternoon for him! He mentioned it again later that night. There are no words to explain how much I love my little boy.

photo(37)I love these small moments with him. I often wish that there was a way to have our life together recorded. I really want my kids to know and see how much I love them and enjoy them. I want them to remember all of our good times, the simple ones. I want make sure I remember them too.

How was your weekend?

  1. He looks so much like you! And I think my husband and I have been on two dates since our second was born. And we nearly had a third last week but I was sick and couldn’t do it. What a bummer. We had a good weekend – we celebrated my grandmother’s 100th birthday!

  2. I think it’s great that you guys had a night out. Sorry to hear that the hubby and the little got sick though. However, you managed to spend sometime with your son–so that’s something positive out of it. I need to spend more 1 on 1 time with my little girl, she’s growing up way to fast.

  5. I NEED my alone time. If I don’t have it there’s no way that I can fully enjoy the company of others. But my baby, oh, my baby gives me so much joy. Like you I wish that I could record some of our most cherished moments. She should know how much Mommy adores her. This makes me want to run to her room and give her a kiss. I think I’ll go do that.

  6. Date night is rare around these parts but it’s so nice not to have to talk to kids because even when everyone goes out to dinner I am talking to the kids more than anything.
