Sunday night I did something I haven’t done in a long time – probably a few years now. I watched 60 Minutes. I had long thought of 60 Minutes as my grandma’s show. Maybe it’s because, it always seemed to be on when I was at her house. My best friend from college is in love with the show and got me into it in my post-college years. Everything in her apartment would shut down and come to a screeching halt whenever she heard the tick, tick, tick of the show coming on.

Well, Sunday night, that was me. Everything shut down and I snuggled up on the couch to catch an episode. This week they talked to Dolly Parton, Anna Wintour and Meryl Streep. I missed Dolly’s segment but I did catch Meryl and Anna.

I have long been a fan of both Streep and Wintour. How could you not be? I love Meryl because she’s this phenomenal actress who can take on any role and master it. My fascination with Anna is, no doubt her reputation but also her dedication to what she does. What strikes me about both women is how dedicated they are to what they do. Both have been at it for decades with no sign of slowing down.

The next day as I thought about that episode, it struck me – these women are arguably the best at what they do and the reason for it is that they love it. They’ve found their passion. I started to think of other people who fit that bill. People who seem to excel in their particular field. There’s the Rihanna’s and Beyonce’s of the world. There’s Oprah, Steven Spielberg and George Lucas. Ted Turner, Vera Wang and Tyler Perry. Even this year’s Super Bowl half time diva, Madonna. This list could go on and on.

The one thing that stood out for me is that in all of them you could tell they followed what they were passionate about and it was paying off for them. Wouldn’t it be great if we all did that? If we all believed enough in ourselves and in our dreams to see them through. To follow them as far as they’d take us. It would be awesome. Every day I try to pull myself closer to that. Closer to the part of me that pursues passion over all else. I’ve seen what it’s like to live on the safe side. I’d like to see what journey passion has in store. I bet it will be the ride of my life.

  1. With most all of the people you mentioned they seem to have come into their own late in life and they worked hard to get to where they are. I think if you are passionate about something take the leap. The worse thing someone can say to you is no.

  2. It sure would be awesome…all those people are very passionate about their craft. Now to only find what it is that I am that passionate about besides my family…hmmm..that’s a toughie!

  3. I’m working on taking that leap. I’m working on following my dreams and doing what I REALLY want to do. The first step was admitting that it isn’t nursing that fires me up. That was a big one.

  4. This post reminds me of a post I started working on months ago…finding my passion. I don’t think my issue is working towards my passion, but finding what it truly is. There are many things that I enjoy, but I have yet to pin down the one thing I would do everyday for the rest of my life if I could.
I hope I will someday finish the post that I started, you just reminded me that my passion is still out there and I need to define it.

  6. The people I love are my passion, as I do everything for them, more than for myself. I know I should start thinking more about my real passion. I guess that’s the problem: I don’t know…
