Let me just throw a couple of words out there and you tell me if any on them ring a bell. Ready?

Daddymoon, man shower, dadchelor parties – do any of these sound familiar to you? No? Me either. Apparently it’s a new trend catching on with daddy-to-be’s all over. It’s like some new rite of passage some men feel they need to go through to cope with becoming a new father. While mom is perfecting her waddle between trips to the bathroom, they’re plotting the final pub crawl. Who knew?

The daddy kick it fest sometimes includes the diaper keg where men bring diapers in exchange for beer. Uh huh. All variations of these (say goodbye to life as you know it) celebrations seem to involve drinking, gambling and sporting events to some extent. The rule is that these “celebrations” must be done at least one month before mom is set to pop. Another rule is that the soon-to-be dad doesn’t have to pay for a drink all day. Wow, isn’t that sweet? Yes ladies, this is  their last hurrah before real responsibility kicks in. What did yours look like?

Parties for the mom are all about baby. Parties for dads have nothing to do with the bambino. I mean, except for acknowledging that the baby is coming and doing the lovely diaper – beer exchange thing.  From what I’ve read there’s no sharing of parenting advice. There are not collective sighs while looking at onesies, no stuffed bears, no cakes in the shape of a stork, no measuring of the ever-expanding belly. None of that. Nope. It really is just a sendoff from the guys. It’s the last time to cut loose with the boys. Great for them.

When it’s women, the celebrations are a little bit different. There will be no all nighters at the club, no long nights at the casino and no pub crawls until the wee hours for obvious reasons. There is no real cut loose send off as we enter motherhood. It’s just not that kind of party on our side of the fence. We do the baby shower thing and rack up loot for the little one. Then it’s all about prepping for the big push. Thinking back, it would have been nice to have some kind of send off into the world of mommy land or even a welcome to motherhood shindig.

I find this “daddymoon” concept really interesting because I hadn’t given much thought to doing something to acknowledge the point in a man’s life when he becomes a father. It’s a big deal.  My husband was involved as much as possible in the pregnancy, baby stuff. If I’m being honest though, things were still all about me.

As far as new trends go, I guess we have push presents and they have this.

  1. I’ve never heard of such things. LOL!

But, I do think it’s interesting that our mommy celebrations are all about the “wonderful things to come with baby” and the daddy celebrations sounds as if it’s the “end of life as you knew it.” The perspective just seems different. I know that the dads are just as happy as mom is to be expecting, the celebration just seems different. Do you think it would change if “baby showers” were always co-Ed? Instead of geared toward mom. Not that I’d want anything to change, I loved my baby showers.

  2. My husband recently took his buddy – who is an expectant father – to AC for his last hurrah! I thought it was cool, but his “baby mama” did not think so…guess to each its on. I am not a fan of jack and jill showers, this is a time for us ladies to sit back and catch up..again to each its on.

  3. I would hope that pregnant moms aren’t doing diaper kegs. 😉

I guess if it makes the dad’s happy then go for it but I’m not sure I completely like the idea.

P.S. I tweeted this post out but I couldn’t remember your Twitter handle and I don’t see it linked anywhere on your site.

    • I get why they’d want to have something, it’s just the polar opposite of how women treat that milestone.

You know, since you aren’t the first person to mention the twitter thing I’m going to need to change it. It’s on the about me page but I need to make it more prominent. Thanks Jessica!

  4. If my husband ever asked me for a “daddymoom” I would absolutely laugh in his face and walk away. We don’t have kids yet, but when we do get ready to welcome a little human into this world I do not want to share my stage time. 😉

Cute post, I had never heard of this — ever.

    • I think it’s hilarious that not only would you laugh in his face but then you’d walk away! Too funny!
