As a mom on a mission, I love to meet up with other moms who have similar goals. At least a year ago, I met Carisa. She’s a mom, wife and entrepreneur making waves in business and helping other women do the same.

: Tell me about your passion.

Carisa Montooth: I’m passionate about helping women entrepreneurs get the emotional support they need in their personal and professional relationships, so they can launch their dream businesses with love and ease. I absolutely love using personality types to show women how to communicate with their Honeys about their businesses and connect with their clients.

CG: How did you discover your passion?

CM: When I was studying Psychology for my B.A., I was especially fascinated by Personality Psychology. Later after I became a counselor, I started presenting personality/communication workshops. People in the workshops started pulling my aside afterwards and saying things like, “My boyfriend is this personality and I’m that personality, how can I talk to him about this issue?” So that led me to connect the personality types with relationships. Later, I started being asked to speak for groups of entrepreneurs and I found that the women in those groups had a really unique set of challenges…their partners were asking them things like “when are you going to get a REAL job with a steady paycheck” or “why are you spending money (AKA investing) in your business when you aren’t making money yet.” And that was what led me to my first few clients and helped me create a relationship coaching program specifically for female entrepreneurs.

CG: Why is it important to you?

CM: I’m an entrepreneur myself and I know how hard it is. When you say to the world, “I have gifts that can help you and they are worthy of sharing”, that’s a huge act of courage. When I began creating a business, it was a completely new thing for me. I know firsthand what it’s like to feel stressed and freaked out, because your partner doesn’t quite understand your business challenges or why you can’t make 3 meals a day when you’re trying to get a business off the ground. And I also know firsthand that you can turn that around and create an amazingly loving and supportive relationship that gives you the support you need so you can show up in every other area of your life, including your business. These things are all personal to me, because I’ve been in that same situation and I know how hard it is. I also know that it can be a hundred times better and I want to help other women have that so they can have the best of both worlds.

CG: As a mom, were there challenges in pursuing your passion?

CM: Always! It’s not easy working 6 days a week with a three-year-old daughter.

CG:Tell us about those challenges?

CM: The biggest challenge I had (and still sometimes have) is guilt. When I first started my business, I was constantly feeling guilty. When I was working I felt guilty about not being with my daughter. When I was with my daughter I felt guilty about the business projects that I wasn’t working on.

CG: How did you overcome your challenges/obstacles?

CM: The most helpful thing for me has been to give up trying to manage everything in my head at once. Now I try to enjoy where I am, when I’m there. So when I’m working, I close the door and focus on what I’m doing for my business that day. When I’m with my daughter, I put my phone down, get on the floor with her, take her outside, or just cuddle with her. I give myself to her for that time and leave the work in my office.

CG: What do you think it does for your daughter to see you go after what you want?

[ctt title=”I think the best thing I can do to show my daughter that she can have whatever life she dreams of is to create it for myself.” tweet=”I can show my daughter that she can have the life she dreams of by creating it for myself. http://ctt.ec/Y3AhW+ @CameshaGosha @CMontooth” coverup=”Y3AhW”]

CM: I think the best thing I can do to show my daughter that she can have whatever life she dreams of is to create it for myself. If she sees me doing it, she knows its possible for her. Not even just possible, but a given. I want her to grow up assuming she can create whatever she wants for herself and that she is smart and resourceful enough to have whatever she wants.

CG: What would be your advice to other moms who are on the fence about pursuing something they are passionate about?

CM: The best thing you can do for your children is to show them they can create the life they want. You can’t just tell them it’s possible; they believe what they see you do. If you want them to use their gifts in the world, show them how you are using yours. Your happiness and fulfillment make you an even better Mommy.

Here are a couple of questions, just for fun!

CG: Jeans or Yoga pants

CM: Dark rinse, high-waist, skinny jeans. Perfect with everything.

CG: Heels or flats

CM: Heels, Mama! Heels, earrings, and red lipstick.

  1. She sounds very down to earth! Like she really gets what moms who also have a business go through – I like that.

  2. Multi tasking is not always easy but it’s rewarding and it can be done with children. I think it’s important to show kids that they can do and be anything by watching us achieve things ourselves.

    • Totally agree with you, Terri! Kids don’t believe what we say, they believe what we do. I don’t think we can be perfect (or that it’s even worthwhile to strive for that), but I think it’s good to let our kids see us using our gifts in the world and that they see us fail and start again. Or else, how will they know what to do when they fail? Glad you liked the article. 🙂

  3. What a great interview. She sounds like a terrific lady. I can see how it would be hard to balance working 6 days a week with a little one.

    • Thanks for your kind words, Liz! We mama entrepreneurs are taking over. It’s such a good time for us and its great to have communities like Camesha’s to get and give the support we need. Glad you liked the interview.

  4. How lovely to be part of a community of amazing Mamas and read all these lovely words! What an honor. Thank you from my heart, Ladies. You made my day! XOXO

  5. I’d love to pursue what I really want to do. Right now it’s whatever comes first though as far as re-entering the work force goes.

  6. Loved this interview! I love hearing about how other people are staying motivated out there!

    • Aw, thanks for those kind words, Sabrina! It helps so much when you know someone out there gets what you are doing, doesn’t it? Stay strong, Mama. 🙂

    • Thanks for your kind words! I love that you are teaching families different ways of connecting. What important work! Glad you liked the interview.

    • Hi Annemarie! I’m glad you enjoyed the interview. I totally agree…we have to have that internal support + support each other so we can all reach our goals together. XOXO

  7. I think endeavoring to be an entrepreneur takes courage and fortitude. There is nothing more rewarding than following your vision and dream and creating a successful business. Yes to the dark wash jeans. I live in a place where yoga pants are seen everywhere all day long. though I applaud comfort, it’s nice to see a girl following her fashion sense!

    • Thanks, Toni! Yes, I just feel so much better when I have my go to fashion staples. Always nice to connect with another lady who feels the same. Glad you liked the interview! (Have you checked out Patricia Bright? Her YouTube channel is my guilty fashion indulgence.) XOXO

    • Thanks, Maria! It’s amazing how much kids absorb, isn’t it? Every night at tuck in time, I tell my daughter she is brave, kind, smart and strong. Now she repeats it right after me. Then I say, “When you grow up you can be…” and she finishes, “anything I want to be in the whole wide world!” The good stuff gets in there! XOXO

    • My husband and I are the same way, Christine! It’s nice for you and your husband to have strengths that complement each other. If you want to see what your love style is, you can take my Love Styles quiz here: http://www.carisamontooth.com/strongest-element-quiz. See if your husband wants to take it too. It’s great to see what motivates the other person, because it helps you show them love in the way that FEELS like love to them. Take care!

    • Thanks for your kind words, Elizabeth! It’s an incredible time to be a woman entrepreneur, isn’t it? I love helping my sister lady bosses bring their gifts out into the world and get the support they need! Take care.

  8. I love reading this article. Multitasking is never easy based on my experience she was a super mom and just really down to earth, i like the advice to her daughter

    • Thanks for your kind words, Victoria. Yes, it’s tricky balancing things for us busy mamas, isn’t it? I’m glad you liked the article!

  9. I find myself feeling guilty too sometimes. Even though I work in home they get mad and sad, but it is better than being away from the home.

    • Oh, Amy! I totally know how you feel. The thing that helps me so much is to let me focus be where my body is right then – I know that sounds weird, right? But if I’m with my daughter, then I put away my phone and give her my attention. If I’m working then I let my focus be on work. When the guilt comes up, my favorite thought to shift my focus is “I am exactly the Mommy my daughter needs.” Another thing that helps me is that I set the timer when I play with my daughter and say, “OK, Honey. Mommy can play for 30 minutes and then you can come play by the office while I’m working.” It’s never ideal, because we’ll always be balancing things (and taking care of ourselves seems to slip to the end of the list), but it’s exactly how it should be. Take care.

  10. Guilt is a big thing for me. I have terrible guilt when it comes to working from home. I have been doing it for quite a few years now and I feel like I let people walk all over me and step on me when it comes to doing things “just because I am home.” I have lost clients and business networks because of this. Now that I am trying to stand up for myself, I’m the big meanie and must hate everyone. No, I just want a career for myself like everyone else does.

    • So true, Crystal. It totally helps having a definite time for each so you don’t have to have your focus always divided…and school being back in session helps too! Take care.

  11. This is a great interview. It is important to teach your kids by being a positive influence.

  12. I love her quote about showing her daughter what she can have by creating it herself. Truth, Mama!

    • Thanks, Megan! It’s so true, isn’t it? They learn from watching what we do, not from what we tell them. Glad you liked the interview. 🙂

  13. I agree with enjoying where you are now. It’s hard sometimes, but you miss out if you don’t.

    • So true, Rosey! I think it’s one of those things that we’ll never do perfectly, but we’ll keep getting better and better at it and enjoying more and more of life along the way. Take care. 🙂
