4.) We’re too old to be getting in trouble…aren’t we? Write about a time you were scolded…as an adult.

I usually don’t have a problem with the law. Usually. I am a law-abiding citizen and dread getting in “trouble” with the authorities. Well, it happened. The peeps with the power decided to take out some of that power on me. I got pulled over this week for holding my phone at a stop light. Literally, holding my phone. It wasn’t up to my ear, it wasn’t near my face – it was 6 inches off the passenger seat of my car and I picked it up and looked at it. Apparently, I broke the law. The lovely cop on a bike pulled up on the side of me and looked down in my car and gave me a look. I said, “I’m not even moving.” He wasn’t moved. Wonderful. So then, the light changes and there’s a gap between me and the car in front of me and I look at the cop and say nicely, “can I go?”. Not sure if he was really going to give me a ticket for LOOKING at my phone at a stop light. He didn’t respond, so I thought I was good to go. I started to drive away and he turns on the flashing lights. Great! I was pulled over. I pleaded, “I wasn’t even moving, I was at a stop light”. His response was that I was still “driving”. He proceeded to write a ticket. Jerk!

I thought “driving” indicated my car was in motion. I thought “sitting” at a stop light, not in motion, was clearly not “driving”. Wrong. It took everything in me to not verbally berate Mr. Cop on a bike. I didn’t because I pictured myself being arrested and hauled off to jail. Not exactly how I wanted things to go down. So those of you who operate your music through your phone, get directions from your phone, or even touch your phone. Watch your back! It doesn’t matter if you’re moving or sitting still at a stop light in bumper to bumper traffic. They’re gonna get ya. Those people better not call me about giving to the policeman’s fund anytime soon. I’m not feeling too charitable toward them at the moment.

  1. Oh wow! You think your going to fight the ticket? You are right, you technically weren’t driving. What are you supposed to do if you need to get directions from your phone?

  2. Not saying its right, but I’ve heard that the car has to be in park for it not to be considered driving. I sympathize with you. That’s just crazy on the cop’s part.

  3. I actually got a speeding ticket when I was 8 1/2 months preggers for going 40 in a 35mph zone. And the worst part?…I KNEW the cop, he was my uncle’s partner when my uncle used to be a cop and the jerk STILL wouldn’t give me break! You shouldn’t have gotten the ticket, the cop was most likely trying to meet his ticket quota….

  4. That’s awful! Does the law in your state say “talking on the phone” or “using the phone?” Is it illegal to use a road map, now? Because I use my GPS on my phone all the time in the car, and like you, I often check it when I’m stopped at a light or stop sign.
In related news: my husband got a ticket several months ago for not STOPPING at a YIELD sign!!! We were simply flabbergasted to learn that there are actually some YIELD signs that you must STOP at! Why not just call them STOP SIGNS for crying out loud? 🙂

  5. I won’t have thought it would have been a problem. I hate driving behind people on their phones. They move so slowly.
